If you are a fan of romance hockey shows like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus, you'll soon have another title to add to your watch lists. An adaptation of Icebreaker, based on Hannah Grace's book of the same name, is officially in the works at Netflix.

In case you are unfamiliar, Icebreaker was released in 2022 and became a BookTok sensation almost immediately. The book has since become a New York Times bestseller, with over five million copies sold worldwide—and counting.

Icebreaker is the latest in Netflix's long list of book adaptations, which also includes romances like People We Meet on Vacation, Forever, Bridgerton, and Heartstopper, among others, and non-romance titles such as A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and Little House on the Prairie.

The Icebreaker adaptation comes from Amanda Lasher and Jade Bartlett and is Netflix's bet into the highly popular world of skating and hockey romance. (Essentially, think Finding Her Edge meets Off Campus.)

“Netflix has a long history of turning beloved romance novels into massive global hits. We know our members can't get enough of these stories, which makes Icebreaker the perfect next chapter for us,” Jinny Howe, head of scripted series for the US and Canada at Netflix, said when the project was announced. “By supercharging the hockey sports romance genre, Icebreaker has ignited a passionate fandom and helped redefine the landscape of contemporary romance."

If you don't want to miss an update about the project, we've gathered everything we know about Netflix's Icebreaker adaptation below.

What will Netflix's Icebreaker adaptation be about?

Netflix has confirmed that the Icebreaker adaptation will be a college romance series. The show will be based on English author Hannah Grace's book of the same name. Both the book and the show follow Anastasia Allen, a competitive figure skater aiming for Olympic gold and a new transfer student at the University of California, Maple Hills, and Nate Hawkins, a hockey player and team captain training to become a pro in the NHL.

The crux of the story? Both are forced to share the same rink after a mishap. “Despite the cold temperatures on the ice, the heat between Anastasia and Nate is undeniable. Is ambition or attraction the sharper blade?” the logline shared by Netflix reads. “Anastasia Allen and Nate Hawkins collide — and discipline gives way to obsession, because the only thing more dangerous than wanting to win is wanting each other.” Did someone say forced-proximity enemies-to-lovers?

Who is involved Netflix's Icebreaker adaptation?

Netflix's Icebreaker adaptation already has a few familiar names attached to it. The show is being executive-produced by Alex Cooper, Matt Kaplan, and Mina Lefevre from Unwell Productions.

You'd most likely recognize Alex Cooper from the Call Her Daddy podcast. She founded Unwell with her husband, Matt Kaplan, in 2023. Kaplan is known for producing a slate of YA projects, including the To All the Boys film saga and XO, Kitty, as well as other projects like the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special. Kaplan also produced 2023's Love at First Sight for Netflix.

Mina Lefevre joined Cooper and Kaplan's company in late 2023 as chief content officer of television. Alongside Kaplan, she was a co-executive producer on the second season of XO, Kitty. In the past, she was also involved in projects such as Pretty Little Liars and The Fosters.

Amanda Lasher and Jade Bartlett will write and executive produce. Bartlett has reportedly already written the pilot. Her previous projects include Road House, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Miller’s Girl. Lasher, known for Gossip Girl, The Bold Type, and Riverdale, among many others, will also serve as showrunner.

“I have been a fan of steamy YA since the 7th grade; reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a text book,” Lasher said in a statement.

“It’s been such a joy to play in Hannah Grace’s world of Icebreaker; a story filled with ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters. But the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people....and we cannot get enough of them,” Bartlett added. “Hannah has created the kind of world you want to live in, and Amanda and I are having an absolute romp with our incredible teams at Unwell and Netflix bringing this cherished story to the screen.”

Are there more books after Icebreaker?

There are indeed. Like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus, Icebreaker is also part of a series set in the same universe. Icebreaker is the first novel in Hannah Grace's Maple Hill series, which also includes two other books: Wildfire and Daydream. All three books take place at the University of California, Maple Hills. The Maple Hill series is explicit and, as such, is considered more NA than YA.

Grace is also working on a secondary series, In the Paddock, inspired by Formula 1, which will also be set in the Maple Hills universe. The first book, titled Champagne Problems, is slated for release in February 2027. “I hope you’re ready to head home in a whole new way. Our main characters are brand new for the series, but they have some verrrrrrry familiar friends,” the author teased on Instagram.
