The Exposed Bra Is the Latest Stripped Back Trend

In recent months, fashion trends have been stripped back — quite literally. Sheer dressesshort shorts, pantsless looks, and exposed thongs have been dominating the style scene. Now, the exposed bra trend is set to be the next big thing — and it also has its roots in the past.

Much like the whale tail, the exposed bra was somewhat of a ‘90s and ‘00s staple. Think white semi-sheer tops with opaque bras, straps sticking out, bras as tops, and even bras over tops. Bonus points if the bra was a bright color, especially a neon one. In the 2010s, the trend evolved to better fit the time, especially more indie and bohemian-inspired aesthetics. Having a halter strap —preferably lace — showing from beneath your shirt was peak fashion.

The visible bra might have been MIA for a while, but 2023 has definitely been the year the trend made its big comeback. The recent corset trend has led up to this moment, with lingerie as outerwear becoming a norm. Now, showing a bra strap or two doesn’t seem like such a big deal. In fact, it’s fashion-forward.

The exposed bra trend had its big moment at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Among all the A-listers present in their high fashion picks, Sydney Sweeney, Scarlett Johansson, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley graced the red carpet in gowns that featured a bra peeking out from the neckline.

Red carpets aside, this trend truly shines as a cool and laid-back look, and it doesn't necessarily always have to come by way of a pre-sewn dress. Leave it to Dua Lipa, whose style perfectly encapsulates this effortless chic aesthetic, to demonstrate just how. The star's take on the trend is a mature, luxurious update that was as simple as pairing a white sheer blouse buttoned low to reveal a black bra that matched her black leather pants.

Dixie D’Amelio also committed to the trend with a Y2K spin, opting for the layered technique most of us would be more familiar with as a statement. The social star wore a beige bra top over her white baby tee, making it the focal point of the look.

No matter how you interpret the exposed bra trend, the best part is that it’s super easy to recreate. You probably already have a bra or two in your closet that you can easily style.
