Tate McRae fans are not happy with her. After the So Close to What musician and dancer was revealed to be collaborating with country singer Morgan Wallen on his forthcoming album I'm the Problem, to say her fans are less than thrilled is an understatement.
Why would they be pissed, you ask? Well, Wallen has been a polarizing figure in the music industry due to a string of controversies, including using racial slurs and getting arrested for throwing a chair off the roof of a Nashville bar. Most recently, Wallen raised eyebrows when he walked off the set of SNL during the end credits, then posted a much-memed photo of a private jet with the caption “Get me to God's country.”
Earlier this week, McRae shared a photo of a Tennessee Volunteers football jersey with “T8” (aka Tate) on the front along with a tiny “MW” logo on it via Instagram Stories. (A pretty on-the-nose teaser, as Wallen hails from Tennessee.)

Earlier this month, Wallen confirmed that the song “What I Want” would be a duet with a female artist… his literal first. Fans put two and two together, and on April 16, Wallen revealed the 37-song tracklist for I'm the Problem, thus confirming his collab with McRae — and her fans wasted no time sharing their thoughts about the collaboration.

“Under the Trump administration, Tate McRae collab w Morgan Wallen, Colleen Hoover book to film adaptations… I don’t know how much more I can take,” wrote one X user.
“The Tate McRae & Morgan Wallen collab is such an odd f*cking choice no matter how you spin it. Morality aside, wtf is she gonna do with him? Perform some acro/contemporary/jazz choreo while he Irish exits mid-song to ‘get back to God’s country?'” wrote another.
Fans also flooded the comments of McRae's most recent Instagram post, saying the collab “feels tone deaf” and asking her to cancel the duet. “Tate… really? That man?” wrote one fan. “The collab w Morgan better be scrapped girl, your fandom is leaving you,” wrote another. “We love u but this is not acceptable,” protested someone else.
On the other hand, some social media users pointed out that another popular musician, Post Malone, is collaborating with Wallen (again), yet has not faced the same backlash as McRae. "People are upset that Tate McRae, a Canadian, has a song with Morgan Wallen, but no one seems to have an issue with Post Malone, an American, doing the same?" wrote an X user. (Malone and Wallen first collaborated back in 2024 on the twice-Grammy-nominated song “I Had Some Help.") See more candid fan reactions below.
