Joe Keery is really tired of people talking about his hair and he's letting the world know. In a new interview with The Daily Beast, the Stranger Things actor shared that he's over the discussion around his thick, flowing hair.
If you have been a fan of the series and Joe, in particular, for a while, you'd know that when he gets a haircut, as he did in 2019, it instantly makes the news. “It’s really ridiculous. It’s not something I have control over,” Joe told The Daily Beast. “It’s just internet fodder that’s carried over and is now attached to me. I can’t really knock it. I have a career, so I have to be like, 'Who cares? I’ll take it.' But it’s also not something I care about at all. Still, people seem to really care about it and fixate on it, for whatever reason. It’s so stupid, honestly.”
Joe, who plays Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, does have some pretty great hair in the series. It's perfectly tousled and rumpled like a '60s rock star. Over the years, it has commanded its fair share of headlines since the series first premiered in 2016. Off the screen though, Joe has been sporting an asymmetrical cut for a while.
In fact, the last time we saw Joe with a Steve Harrington-esque 'do out and about was in late 2021, probably because the series had just wrapped filming then.
But back to the present day: according to The Daily Beast, Joe wore a hat throughout their interview. He apparently also wears them around New York City to help keep a low profile, as his signature look is instantly recognizable.
His hair is so good that the actor even shared that he was asked to be a haircare brand rep, but he declined. He's so aware of the conversation around his hair that he mentions it in one of his new songs. (ICYMI: he is also a musician who performs under the name DJO.) “Your insults don’t affect me with my favorite coat on / I know my hair looked good in the bathroom at the bar,” he sings in the song "Gloom."
Speaking of hair and DJO, in late July, during his set at Lollapalooza in Chicago, the star looked completely different. He took to the stage with a ginger 'do that fell just above his shoulder. Given that his trademark brunette hair was very much still there when the premiere for Stranger Things 4 premiere took place in May, we're inclined to think the ginger was courtesy of a wig but you never really know.
One thing is for sure though: a new era is on the horizon for Joe as Stranger Things winds to a close with its forthcoming fifth season. We may be preparing to say goodbye to Steve, but that doesn't mean it's the last we'll see of Joe Keery and his great hair — no matter what color or shape it is.
