If you thought Bretman Rock wearing Aaliyah's dress to the VMAs in 2021 was iconic, you're going to want to be seated for Sabrina Carpenter's VMAs 2025 after-party look as well.
In case you didn't tune into the actual ceremony on September 7, Sabrina Carpenter was among the most-nominated artists for the VMAs 2025 and ended up taking home three Moon Person awards during the night, including Best Pop Artist and Best Album. The star also took the stage as one of the many performers of the night, putting on a rendition of “Tears,” off her new album Man's Best Friend.
Carpenter might have had a great night musically speaking, but she also had a great night in terms of sartorial style. The star had a total of three outfit changes during the VMAs ceremony, rocking a custom Valentino red lace gown by Alessandro Michele on the red carpet, a vintage showgirl bra from Lidow to perform (post-reveal), and a 1986 embellished cocktail dress from Bob Mackie to receive her awards.
However, her most iconic dress of the night arrived long after the ceremony had wrapped up, when she was spotted en route to her very own Studio 54-themed Sabrina 54 after-party, in partnership with Amazon Music. The star arrived at her after-party venue in Manhattan, paying the highest homage to Studio 54: rocking an original Bob Mackie confection first worn by none other than Cher 50 years ago.
Cher notably wore the striking creation in 1975 to perform “Shame Shame Shame” on The Cher Show alongside Tina Turner, who also rocked a complementary gown with inverted colors.
The halter-neck black crêpe bodysuits were custom-made for the diva duo specifically for this performance, which you can watch above. The designs featured turquoise and pink grosgrain ribbons, adorned with mirrored silver metal discs for an extra flashy quality, that cascaded into floppy car wash skirts.
Tina Turner's dress was sold at an auction by Julien's in 2018 for $6,400. Both dresses were on display at The Standard Oil Building in Beverly Hills, California, as part of the Icons & Idols: Hollywood & Street Contemporary Art Auction preview.
While neither Carpenter nor her long-time stylist, Jared Ellner, has shared where they sourced Cher's dress from, it's clear that this serve will go down in VMAs fashion history — even if it technically happened after the show.
