The Academy Award nominations always sparks discourse about snubs and surprise nominees, and the Oscars 2024 nominations are no different.

The 2024 Oscar nominees were announced on January 23, 2024, about six weeks ahead of the 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday, March 10. After a year filled to the brim with Barbenheimer debates, all eyes were on directors Christopher Nolan and Greta Gerwig when the Oscar nominations were announced — but judging by the nods, life in plastic might not be so fantastic after all.

Despite being the highest-grossing film of 2023 — literally surpassing $1 billion at the global box office and making Gerwig the highest-grossing female director of all timeBarbie did not make the top three films with the most nominations at this year's Oscars. The film still earned eight nods, though, including one for Best Picture, the biggest award of the night.

Notably missing from these nominations are Margot Robbie for Best Actress and Greta Gerwig for Best Director, two key categories of the ceremony. America Ferrera collected one of those eight nods for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, a surprise in comparison to the oft-predicted Best Actress nom for Robbie.

After Robbie's castmates Ferrera and Ryan Gosling — and strangely, Hillary Clinton?spoke out against the snubs, Robbie herself addressed the outrage. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed… Obviously, I think Greta [Gerwig] should be nominated as a director because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing,” the actor and producer said at a special SAG screening in late January, adding that she is “beyond ecstatic that we’ve got eight Academy Award nominations” including their Best Picture nod.

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact," Robbie continued. “And it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”

Other major snubs include The Color Purple and its leading actress Fantasia Barrino; May December's Charles Melton (the buzz-worthy movie only picked up one nomination for Best Original Screenplay); and Past Lives star Greta Lee (the film earned two non-acting nominations). And if you came for Saltburn, you have to go somewhere else, as the salacious Emerald Fennell production scored a total of zero nods.

Despite Gerwig’s absence in the Best Director category, there were still some major wins for women in the 2024 Oscar nominations list. For the first time ever, three of the best picture nominees — Past Lives, Barbie, and Anatomy of a Fall — are directed by women. Lily Gladstone makes history as the first Native American actress to be nominated for Best Actress, and Past Lives director and screenwriter Celine Song also makes history as the first Asian woman to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

All in all, Oppenheimer leads the pack with 13 total nominations, followed by Poor Things with 11, Killers of the Flower Moon with 10, and Barbie in fourth place with 8. The 2024 Academy Awards are set to commence on Sunday, March 10 at 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT. Below, see the complete list of Oscars 2024 nominations.
