Why Did Normani Skip the BET Awards 2024?

The singer directly addressed fans after canceling her scheduled performance one hour before the show's start.

If you tuned into the BET Awards 2024 on June 30, you probably noticed Normani was notably absent at the event. The star, who put out her debut solo album Dopamine earlier the same month, was scheduled to perform at the famed awards show alongside the likes of GloRilla, Ice Spice, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, and more but pulled out at the last minute.

Just an hour before the BET Awards ceremony was scheduled to start at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, Normani took to Instagram to inform her fans that she'd be canceling her performance after sustaining an injury during rehearsals for the show.

“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone, believe me,” Normani started her statement. “I wanted to get on here and give you guys an update, letting you know that while in rehearsals for BET, I had a really bad accident and injured myself.”

Normani continued saying that while she's “normally good for powering through under any circumstance,” her doctors advised her against it. “I am just not able to make this performance happen. I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage, but performing would delay my healing."

Normani's statement continued: “I am devastated and hate feeling like a disappointment to you, but I have to focus on recovering at this time. Trust me, I hear you, and I see you. There is nothing more that I wanted to do than perform for you and also get back to doing what fulfills me most: BEING ON STAGE.”

After posting her statement, the singer also gave fans a glimpse of her injury, which seems to have affected her knee and ankle. In a second slide, Normani shared a picture of herself using crutches with her right knee covered in bandages. On the same foot, she was sporting a walking boot.

Normani's canceled performance at the BET Awards would have marked the first time the singer performed tracks from Dopamine live and her return to the BET Awards. We are wishing her a speedy recovery!
