Naomi Osaka has been tapping into the coquette aesthetic lately. Back in August, she brought the trend to the 2024 US Open with her match outfit and gear, giving it a sporty twist. Now, she’s opted for a very elegant take on coquette with a dress and beauty hack that’s reminiscent of fashion’s favorite anime character Sailor Moon. Or, a Cullen from Twilight, depending on how you look at it.
During a screening and panel for the film Julie Keeps Quiet, which she served as an executive producer for, Osaka wore a pink corseted mini dress from Lirika Matoshi. The focal point of the piece is the protruding bows that circle around the fitted bodice. Among both fashion and anime fans, the bow dress has been likened to Sailor Moon. In particular, the silhouette is similar to her transformation sequence, when she goes from regular boisterous teenager Usagi Tsukino to Pretty Guardian with the words “moon prism power, make up.” Sparkles and pink ribbons form around her body and her outfit changes into her uniform, complete with the bow.
Osaka didn’t just get the bow and ribbons part down. She brought the glitter too, even if she didn’t really mean to do so. In her Instagram stories, she revealed that she accidentally shattered her Fenty highlighter. “Tragedy has struck,” she wrote. Not letting it go to waste, she mixed it with a lotion and applied it to her body. While Sailor Moon does also sparkle during her transformation, Osaka’s mind went to another fictional character instead, vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen.
So if you regrettably weren’t able to get your hands on ColourPop’s coveted Twilight collection, perhaps this hack from Naomi Osaka herself can help quench your thirst for an ultra romantic shimmer. Just in time for the holiday season and all the festive outfits!
