The past 16 months have uprooted our lives; changing the way we engage with one another, how we work and go to school, reconsidering what we value the most, and forcing us all to sloooow down. In that time, Marc Jacobs went back to his roots, taking the time to remember why he loved fashion, especially in-person runway shows, and why “creativity is vital to our existence, to life” – he said in his Fall 2021 show notes.
Skipping out on all of the virtual fashion shows that took place last year, Marc Jacobs showed his Fall 2021 ready-to-wear collection, and first collection in over a year, at the New York Public Library – taking us out of the present moment and into the Space Age. Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber were unrecognizable. There were oversized puffer jackets and snoods, holographic dresses and pants, and platform Mary Janes.
It was extravagant and over-the-top. The designer embarked on a much-needed fashion adventure that reminded us why fashion is so inspiring, why fashion forces us to use our imaginations: escapism. Not to ignore the problems of the world but to allow, even if just for a moment, a sense of joy, an expansion on the idea of what’s possible, and a way to look forward to the future – like showing puffer coats and oversized knits on a scorching 90-degree day.
