It’s no secret that this year, Malia Obama is basically the #1 college admissions draft pick. The only question, of course, is where the first daughter will ultimately apply, be accepted, and enroll next fall. There are plenty of ways you can pick a college — rank, location, earning potential of grads… This week, WWD provided yet another factor for Malia to consider, though: campus style.
They break down 10 schools Malia’s contemplating, using metrics like ranking, tuition, and acceptance rate (all gathered from U.S. News & World Report). But they also added a special addition about who Malia should hit up for those oh-so-crucial recommendations because, we imagine, she can nab just about anyone in the world and, of course, the “sartorial stereotype” of what each school’s students are best known for wearing.
The stereotypes range from #1 Princeton’s “sports jackets, penny loafers, and leather accessories,” to #20 UC Berkeley’s “anything goes — the Bay Area is home to far weirder things,” to #9 University of Pennsylvania's "basic, in every sense of the word." Some of the schools are definitely more fashion forward than others — take #29 Barnard's "big brands on campus" of Isabel Marant, Celine, and Stella McCartney as compared to #2 Harvard's, um, sweatshirts from the school bookstore. You can see the whole list on WWD.
Obviously, we can’t wait to see where Malia eventually ends up. We don't know if she's trying to coordinate her closet with her college pick, but no matter where she goes, we’re sure she’ll add her own signature style to the campus mix.
