Last year, Barbiecore dominated warm-weather trends. This year, there’s another fictional character in town; Hello Kitty. The fashionable feline is quickly becoming one of the buzziest names in the fashion industry.
Hello Kitty, a character from the Japanese entertainment company Sanrio, isn’t new to the fashion industry. From luxury labels like Blumarine and GCDS to athletic brands like Nike and Puma, Hello Kitty has collaborated with several fashion powerhouses over the years. She also appeared on the runway at New York Fashion Week for Leaf Xia and London Fashion Week for Jimmy Paul in 2019. Plus, she's been a street style staple for years.
It’s safe to say that Hello Kitty has been a fashion icon for quite some time now. But recently, we keep finding her familiar face featured in some of the most fashionable celebrities’ spring OOTDs.
Both Saweetie and Dua Lipa welcomed the new season and warmer weather with Hello Kitty bra tops. Saweetie sported a chain bralette adorned by Hello Kitty figurines. She went full Y2K for the look with denim jeans, a matching denim jacket, a name plate necklace, hoops, and a Chanel backpack. Dua Lipa also shared an Instagram post wearing a crocheted string bikini top with Hello Kitty’s face on it and checkered bottoms to match from the new GCDS collaboration.
Throughout their trip to Japan, where Hello Kitty was created, Kim Kardashian and North West have been repping the cat too. In a recent post, North West was sporting not one but two Hello Kitty purses; one clutch and one milk carton-shaped crossbody. Both Kim and North also added Hello Kitty to their manicures. Kim kept it subtle with a Hello Kitty charm on one nail and a spring cherry blossom on the other. North went all out with adornments on each nail, including Hello Kitty and another Sanrio character, Kuromi.

Hello Kitty also remains a longtime favorite of BLACKPINK’s Jisoo. The K-pop idol has been known to incorporate a Hello Kitty accessory or two into her outfit, like her Hello Kitty phone case. So if you need inspiration to add Hello Kitty into your wardrobe, just scroll through Jisoo’s Instagram and you’ll see plenty of hats, headbands, bracelets and more.
Gracing all these celebrities, Hello Kitty has the potential to be one of the most defining trends of spring and summer 2023. It seems like Hello Kittycore might be the next big thing.
