What is The Testaments about?

The Testaments is a sequel series to The Handmaid's Tale based on Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel of the same name, which won the coveted Booker Prize alongside Bernardine Evaristo's Girl, Woman, Other. Hulu describes The Testaments as “a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead.”

The official logline for the show is as follows: “The series follows young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead's borders. As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia's elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future.”

“More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within,” the official synopsis for the book reads. “At this crucial moment, the lives of three women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by that of Aunt Lydia, whose complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.”
