Golden Globes 2024 kicked off Hollywood's awards season on Sunday, Jan. 7, with pomp and circumstance to spare as celebrities like Charles Melton, Taylor Swift, Timothée Chalamet, Bella Ramsey, Ayo Edebiri, Emma Stone, Quinta Brunson, and more walked the red carpet in their finest looks ahead of the show, which honors movies and TV released Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2023.
Golden Globes host Jo Koy, a comedian with multiple Netflix specials, started the ceremony with the usual actor and movie/show roasts, with a timely spin (see: ozempic). He also joked that Killers of the Flower Moon made him realize that white people steal everything, and that the Golden Globes room is “really white.” Not wrong. This comes a year after Jerrod Carmichael's opening monologue jokes about racism, representation, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's controversial past. (Note: The HFPA no longer oversees the Golden Globes, and the show is now a "for-profit enterprise," The Hollywood Reporter wrote.)

Everyone Smelled the Jacob Elordi Bath Water Candle
Of all the takeaways from the movie Saltburn, one was that Jacob Elordi's bath water deserved its own candle scent. (IYKYK.) At the Golden Globes, an Entertainment Tonight host brought said candle to the red carpet and had various celebrities smell it, including America Ferrera, Rosamund Pike, and Margot Robbie. As far as red carpet bits go, this one is pretty good.

Charles Melton Brought His Mom as His Date
Riverdale-turned-May/December star Charles Melton is in his prestige era — and he brought his mom along for the ride at the Golden Globes. (And he made sure the Golden Globes red carpet host pronounced her name right.) The actor is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his starring turn in May/December, and he's continuously credited his mother Sukyong Melton for her support as the film has picked up acclaim. During a recent Critics Choice event, he gave an emotional speech, saying, "“I stand today in front of my mother. I’m proud of my Korean American heritage. Umma, umma. You are my hero.”

Glen Powell Joked About Body Swapping Justin Hartley
Oh award shows, where mixing up celebrities is as commonplace as a designer gown. After The Hollywood Reporter shared a photo of This Is Us star Justin Hartley captioned “Glen Powell has arrived for tonight's 2024 Golden Globes ceremony,” Powell — who recently starred in Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney — roasted the outlet with a lighthearted bit: “I think this is the perfect time to announce that @justinhartley and I will be starring in the most boring body-swap movie of all time.” There is some resemblance, to be fair!

Colman Domingo Honored Bayard Rustin With a Poignant Accessory
Colman Domingo (Euphoria, The Color Purple) is nominated for a Golden Globe for his titular role in Rustin, a Netflix biopic about the gay civil rights activist and leader Bayard Rustin — and he honored Rustin with an accessory detail you might have missed. “Today I will wear one of Bayard’s rings that were gifted to me from his dear Walter Naegle,” Domingo wrote on Instagram, referencing the artist and photographer who was Rustin's partner until his death in 1987. “I am at the Golden Globes representing this incredible man and his legacy.”

Taylor Swift Was Not into This Golden Globes Joke
All eyes were on Taylor Swift at the Golden Globes, but she didn't seem into a certain overdone Travis Kelce joke by host Jo Koy, who said, "The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift." The camera panned to Swift, who kept her face stony as she took a sip from her glass. Fair!

Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld, and Shameik Moore Made Fun of Studio Execs Post-Strike
Presenting the award for best motion picture screenplay, Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld, and Shameik Moore did a bit where they read lines as if they'd been written by studio executives, a hit at the success of 2023's WGA and SAG strikes. They combined stilted dialogue with even more stilted delivery ("I am relatable," Hailee deadpanned) and the result was one of the funniest moments of the night. Pay your writers!!

Taylor Swift Ran to Selena Gomez for a Hug
If Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are in the same room, fans are going to clamor for a Taylena moment — and at the Golden Globes, they got it. In Christmas red and green, the two pals basically ran to each other during a commercial break, embracing and sharing some whispered words as people around filmed them. They also posed for photos, aka more pics to add to their friendship history vault.

Ayo Edebiri Thanked the Assistants, Who Do the Real Work
Assistants might not always get their respect, but this time they did, thanks to Ayo Edebiri. She took home the win for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series for her role in The Bear, and as she scrambled to recall everyone of importance, she managed to include a special nod to assistants: “All of my agents and managers assistants, the people who answer my emails, y'all are real ones. Thank you answering my crazy, crazy emails. I'm really really grateful.” Her words earned a flood of applause, including an approving head nod from Taylor Swift. Assistants: rarely heard but notably always around, handling every miscellaneous and often tedious task and (almost) never getting the credit they deserve.

Lily Gladstone Spoke Blackfeet During Her Acceptance Speech
Lily Gladstone, who was nominated for her first Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, took home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama on Sunday evening. Gladstone opened her acceptance speech speaking in the Blackfeet language, making her historic win even more historic for the Indigenous community — especially when the captions on both cable television and streaming captioned her words as “speaking a global language.” “…Like the Blackfeet language isn’t LITERALLY AMERICAN,” wrote one viewer on Twitter/X.
