A teacher from Texas named Kelsey Leigh Gutierrez allegedly raped two male students, then ranked their sexual performances in texts sent to the victims. Apparently, an investigation into the various incidents began after police were given anonymous tip. The Independent has written up the case as reported by KPRC 2 News:
There seems to be a bit of resistance to call this "rape," presumably because the victims were male. While the incident itself was allegedly non-violent, there remains the issue of consent. This kind of abuse of power is absolutely rape, regardless of the genders involved.
On the most basic level, consent means vocal acceptance, but there are factors that obscure the purity of that decision. People in positions of power should not use their perceived authority to influence consent, especially in an educational setting. A sexual relationship between a student and teacher crosses a disturbing ethical line in its misuse of power, and that's true even if the student in question is an 18-year-old man.
