Dove Cameron is a brunette no more. The actor and musician is back to blonde after a foray into cherry cola hair and deep, dark brunette, just in time for her birthday.
Dove Cameron showed off the new hair color — a soft, dimensional wheat blonde that looks stunning with her skin tone and hazel eyes — on Instagram on January 15 to celebrate her 28th birthday. "Hello strangers," she wrote. "It is my birthday." In the photos, Cameron poses topless with her back to the camera, showing off both her new blonde hair and a giant back tattoo.
It looks like the star now has a large, intricately designed tattoo running down her spine and across each shoulder blade, taking up quite a bit of real estate on her back. Judging by a comment left on the post, the new design, Cameron's largest to date, was done by Hwang Yongseop (a.k.a. @drag_ink) of celeb-favorite parlor Bang Bang Tattoo in NYC. The ink joins a few smaller back tattoos, including the word "alchemical" near one shoulder.

Cameron is a bit of a beauty chameleon, often changing up her look with hair color, tattoos, and makeup to suit her mood and the era of her career. We've seen her with platinum blonde hair, rich red, and nearly black brunette, and she's got tons of tattoos. According to Cameron, she got her first ink when she was just 14. (It was a Capricorn zodiac symbol.) Now she has more than 20 tattoos, including snakes, daggers, teeny finger tats, and a gun with a rose, a tribute to her late Descendants costar Cameron Boyce.
As for the hair, Cameron said going brunette was a "total identity shift" for her. "I have so much genuine, emotional pain attached to being a blonde," she told E! News in 2022. “When I dyed my hair, it was a reclamation of deciding who I was versus who I felt I always had to be. I feel like I have more fun now, and I feel more in touch with myself. It's wild how something as small as a hair color can do that for us.”
Could the darker blonde be a sign of an upcoming new era for Cameron, or was she simply ready to shed her brunette in favor of something lighter for winter? TBD on that, but there is something about an impending birthday that makes you want to change things up. Been there, done that!
