But still, the sheer dress has dominated red carpets so completely this year that it seemed like every possible iteration of peekaboo style had been done. And yet here is Bailey at the 2022 MTV VMAs in a sheer corset dress so stunning, it's as if we're seeing the look for the first time.
It's all about the bodice with this dress—it fits Bailey like a glove and the dramatic lines call to mind a superhero's armor, like Wonder Woman at a black-tie gala. In fact, that's not too far off of Bailey's inspiration for the look: The singer and actor, who was styled by Jennifer Udechukwu, posted her outfit on Instagram with the caption, “Alien superstar.” (A nod to a lyric from her mentor Beyoncé, what a flex.)

The singer and actor's silver sequined dress is custom Zigman, and she accessorized with matching silver Jimmy Choo shoes, Just Desi earrings, and H. Crowne bracelets. It's a look that says, “I'm ready to collect my moonperson.” (Bailey is nominated for Best R&B video for her song “Have Mercy.”)
Chloe Bailey wore a silver dress to last year's VMAs as well, though it had a much more surprising accessory: a spoon. Yep, the singer's Marni dress that year came with a large silver spoon attached to the front—a surprising addition that resulted in a number of confused Google searches. What does it mean? The dress was part of the brand's fall-winter 2021 collection, which was presented via a series of videos in which models shared in “joyful meals” together as a reminder of pre-pandemic life.
