Charli XCX is gearing up for the release of her Brat remix album on October 11 and taking the chance to open up about the remix that started it all: “Girl, so confusing" with Lorde.

In case you need a timeline refresher, Charli XCX officially entered her Brat era in June of 2024 and transformed summer for us all. The British musician dropped her now-iconic green album on June 7, followed by its "deluxe" version, Brat, and it’s the same, but there are three more songs, so it’s not just a few days later. And then came the “Girl, so confusing” remix.

Charli XCX and Lorde famously worked it out in the remix, but, as it turns out, Charli wasn't so sure it'd work out this way when she first released the song, and she's opening up all about it to Apple Music's Zane Lowe.

In an exclusive preview Teen Vogue can premiere from Charli XCX's Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, which you can watch below, the singer admits she was quite fearful about putting out the original song in the album as Lorde's reaction could have been a lot different than how it turned out.

“I was ready for her to never speak to me again. That could have been an outcome,” Charli XCX tells Lowe in the interview, admitting she didn't really give the New Zealander a chance to listen before the song's release because time differences messed up her original plan.

“I was like, 'I've got to tell you about this song.' And she was like, 'Yeah, I've heard it.' I was like, 'How have you heard it? It's not out til tomorrow,'” Charli admitted. The duo then sent voice notes back and forth, and the remix was born.

“I had always wondered whether she would possibly want to do a response on the remix. This was, as I said, I'd always wanted to do this remix album, but she actually suggested it first. She was like, 'Wouldn't it be cool if I did this response?' And I was like, 'Oh, my God. I can't believe this is happening. Yes.' And it was so quick. I mean, she said that on, I think, Friday, and she sent me the verse by Monday.”
