Being the bigger person is overrated. At least, that’s the idea the best revenge songs would have you believe — and they’ve honestly got a point. Swapping anger for inner peace is a noble concept, sure. But sometimes, there’s just more honesty in wanting retribution.
Consider the example of revenge song auteur Taylor Swift, who, with her “Taylor’s Version” album re-releases and record-breaking Eras Tour, effectively staged a years-long revenge act to buy back the masters that are rightfully hers. By pushing back against exploitative record label practices, she arguably helped other artists negotiate better contracts for themselves. And she also became a torch-carrier of a long tradition: One of getting payback in and through revenge songs.
As long as people have had grudges and guitars, they’ve been singing about getting even — and sometimes, like Swift, using music itself as the means to. There’s the example of early war-cry songs about revenge, like “The Pitman’s Revenge Against [Napoleon] Bonaparte,” first performed in 1804. And then there’s the more modern rise of diss tracks, starting with 1985’s fiery “Roxanne’s Revenge.” Recorded by then-14-year-old rapper Roxanne Shanté, it kicked off a period of New York hip-hop known as the “Roxanne Wars” and set a standard for clapping back in song — a blueprint that, over 40 years, has been updated again and again, across genres.
Today, revenge songs give voice to the feelings we’re often told to suppress: anger, betrayal, spite, and the petty satisfaction of seeing someone get what they deserve. Whether you’re stewing in heartbreak or just craving a little righteous fury, a good revenge anthem lets you feel all of it — loudly, unapologetically, and usually with a good hook.
Ready for some cathartic, revenge-driven rage? We’ve rounded up our favorite songs about revenge to match every mood, from breakup songs with bite to scorched-earth songs about betrayal that’ll help you light a match to the past. (Metaphorically, right? Right.)
1. “Hit 'Em up Style (Oops!)” by Blu Cantrell
This early-2000s R&B hit turns heartbreak into high-end revenge, making and closing the case for getting payback of the literal variety. To tap into the song’s full healing powers, you’ll want to take a cue from Blu Cantrell (born Tiffany Cobb) and get your besties to sing backup from the back of a shopping bag-filled convertible.
2. “Goodbye Earl” by The Chicks
Put on this sing-songy karaoke classic with the person who’d be the Mary Anne to your revenge-seeking Wanda. Among revenge songs of the country murder ballad stripe, we’re pretty sure nothing beats this late-‘90s hit written by Dennis Linde and made famous by The Chicks. (Anyone else stifle back a sob at the line “Right away, Mary Anne flew in from Atlanta // On a red eye midnight flight”? Just me?)
3. “My Kink is Karma” by Chappell Roan
Chappell knew what she was talking about when singing that, sometimes, the most satisfying revenge is watching the person who wronged you ruin their own life. So sit back, laissez-faire style, and let out your best diabolical cackle.
4. “One Way Or Another” by Blondie
This late-1970s Blondie hit has a darker backstory than its upbeat tune might signal. In reality, it was inspired by frontwoman Debbie Harry’s experience being forced to move states to shake an ex-turned-stalker. By funneling the horror of that experience into an inescapably iconic song, though, Harry had the last word.
5. “Bitch Better Have My Money” by Rihanna
Rihanna released this track a year after settling a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against her former accountants, whom she accused of mismanaging her money. Supported by a cinematic revenge-fantasy music video, it’s the perfect anthem for when you’re of the persuasion to go get yours.
6. “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac
Because what revenge could be sweeter than reminding your ex they’re doomed to never forget you — in front of an audience of thousands of people who hate their guts, and for decades on end? Stevie Nicks’ “Edge of Seventeen” also deserves a mention here for sounding exactly like the pump-up you need to hold someone accountable.
7. “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore
Look to lesbian icon Lesley Gore the next time you need to remind someone to take their paws off your life. Even more than the song’s back-off lyrics, its iconic use in The First Wives Club — a scorned-women revenge film for the ages — makes it a classic score-settling track.
8. “Fuck You” by Cee Lo Green
It’s about time the kids saved this absurdly catchy jingle from grocery-store-playlist obscurity, where it’s been more or less stuck since 2011. With its Motown-inspired bounce and unapologetically blunt lyrics, this song turns heartbreak into a sing-along spectacle.
9. “Stronger” by Britney Spears
Because we know we don’t need to send “Cry Me a River” any more streams. How about crying us one, JT?
10. “Better Than Revenge” by Taylor Swift
On the subject of feeling furious: Don’t be mad we made you scroll this far for one of Taylor Swift’s (many) revenge songs, okay? Given how well Swift is known for putting payback at the center of her songwriting, this line from 2010 was prescient: “There is nothing I do better than revenge.” There may not be a Reputation (Taylor’s Version) coming anytime soon, but with Swift now owning her masters, Swifties can in good conscience follow this up with “Bad Blood” or “Look What You Made Me Do.”
11. “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” by Whitney Houston
This one’s up there with the best break up songs of all time — and proof that making it anyway, no matter how badly you’ve been wronged, is spite done right. Paired with Whitney Houston’s commanding vocals, it’s a masterclass in dignified defiance and the ultimate torch song for walking away with your head high.
12. "good 4 u" by Olivia Rodrigo
With a music video inspired by Jennifer’s Body — the cult-classic ode to teen-girl vengeance — Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u” cemented her place in the canon of great get-even anthems. It pairs pop-punk teen angst with mascara-streaked fury, and we’re pretty sure researchers will one day study the exorcism-like properties of scream-singing the line: “Like a damn sociopath.”
13. "Bust Your Windows" by Jazmine Sullivan
Picture it: It’s the mid-to-late aughts. And between Jazmine Sullivan singing about busting car windows out and a future performer at Trump’s 2025 inauguration bragging about taking a Louisville slugger to headlights (“Before He Cheats”), car-owning cads are worried. For her 2008 breakout hit, Sullivan blended orchestral strings with an R&B groove for a revenge anthem that feels theatrical in the best way.
14. “Your Time Is Gonna Come” by Led Zeppelin
Looking for songs about betrayal that scratch that poetic-justice itch? This 1969 Led Zeppelin slow burn delivers with a calm but cutting warning to a “lyin’, cheatin’, hurtin’” partner. The repeated chorus — “your time is gonna come” — sounds like a prophecy, reminding us that karma might take its time, but it doesn’t forget.
15. “Gives You Hell” by The All-American Rejects
Sometimes, a heaping dose of pettiness is just what the doctor ordered. Not convinced? You might be after blasting this 2008 pop-punk hit in the car. It’s best when scream-sung as loudly as possible — because the best revenge is living well and being just a little annoying about it.
16. “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” by Shakira and Bizarrap
In this ultra-danceable collaboration between Shakira and Argentine producer Bizarrap, direct aim is taken at Shakira’s ex, Gerard Piqué. Becoming a global mega-hit almost overnight, and with multiple broken streaming records in its wake, the song’s success gave added credence to this line: “You thought you'd hurt me, but you made me stronger // Women no longer cry, women get paid.”
17. "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette
With this searing breakout hit — commonly believed to be about Dave Coulier, or Joey from Full House, who dated Alanis Morissette at 33 when she was just 18 — Morissette may have defined today’s breakup song genre. Their uncomfy age difference, coupled with Coulier’s self-reportedly clueless reaction when hearing the song for the first time, is pretty much all the proof we need this takedown was deserved.
18. “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen
This one’s basically the Rocky theme song for revenge-seekers and athletes with sworn rivals (who, let’s be honest, are just revenge-seekers in uniform). With its stomping bassline and boatloads of swagger, it’s the perfect soundtrack for plotting your comeback, someone else's well-earned downfall, or both.
19. “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar
If success is the best revenge, then “Not Like Us” — the blistering crown jewel in Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s hyper-public feud — has to be the biggest revenge song of the past year.
Just in case chart-topping performance and a pile of Grammy Awards aren’t proof enough this diss track belongs in the revenge song hall of fame, though, Lamar sealed the deal by name-dropping Drake while performing “Not Like Us” at the 2025 Super Bowl. Wearing internet-breaking flared jeans and a Cheshire Cat-like smirk you could see from space, he made clear revenge is even sweeter when stadium-sized.
