Met Gala 2025 might be the biggest night in fashion, but it's also one of the best nights for memes. As the biggest stars and designers make their way up the famous steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the regular people at home were busy making everyone laugh about the lavish event.
This year's Met Gala theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which was inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibit showcases Dandyism, a term that goes back to the early 18th century, “originating in Europe to describe middle-class men who enjoyed socializing, fine dining, the arts, and generally lavish lifestyles,” as Teen Vogue's Danielle Kwateng wrote.
This is the first time in 20 years that the exhibit will exclusively feature menswear that has particular resonance with African American history. “I feel that the show itself marks a really important step in our commitment to diversifying our exhibitions and collections, as well as redressing some of the historical biases within our curatorial practice,” lead curator Andrew Bolton said in a statement. “It’s very much about making fashion at the Met more of a gateway to access and inclusivity.”
Despite the historical importance of the exhibit and the theme itself, fashion lovers and the Very Online crowd couldn't help but report live with snarky comments and judge all the red carpet looks from their sweatpants (relatable).
