The two stars are joining forces in Apple TV+'s new limited series, Lucky, which Taylor-Joy will not only star in but also executive produce alongside creator Jonathan Tropper and Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine.
A new Apple Studios production, Lucky will also feature Cassie Pappas as co-showrunner and marks a new collab between Apple TV+ and Hello Sunshine, following The Morning Show, The Last Thing He Told Me, and Surface.
"It is incredibly rewarding to be able to amplify these female-centric stories and their authors, see our community connect with them, then see them take on a whole new life on screen,” Witherspoon said of Lucky in a statement shared by Apple. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Apple TV+ and the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy, plus our brilliant creator Jonathan Tropper and his wonderful co-showrunner Cassie Pappas, to bring this compelling series – based on Marissa Stapley’s fantastic novel – to audiences around the world.”
Below, find out everything you need to know about Apple TV+'s Lucky with Drew Starkey and Anya Taylor-Joy, including a first look at their characters.
What will Lucky be about?
Lucky is based on Marissa Stapley’s 2021 bestselling novel of the same name. Simon & Schuster describe the original book as “a thrilling roller-coaster ride about a heist gone terribly wrong, with a plucky protagonist who will win readers’ hearts.”
In the book, grifter Lucky Armstrong pulls off a million-dollar heist alongside her scammer boyfriend, Cary, but then everything goes sour, and she finds herself on her own “navigating the world without the help of either her father or her boyfriend” and with a new identity.
On a whim, Lucky buys a lottery ticket that ends up being worth millions, but there is one catch: as a fugitive, she can't cash it.
According to Apple's official logline, the show will follow Anya Taylor-Joy “as a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.” The script for the show has been written by Jonathan Tropper.
Who is in the cast of Lucky?
Lucky stars Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role of Lucky, with Outer Banks star Drew Starkey securing what's been billed as a “major recurring role” as Cary, Lucky’s husband.
The rest of the cast is rounded off by Annette Bening as Priscilla, who is described as “a dangerous mob leader,” Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Agent Billie Rand, and Timothy Olyphant as Lucky’s father, John.
Jonathan Van Tulleken, who previously helmed the critically acclaimed Shōgun, is set to direct the series' pilot as well as several episodes. He will also serve as executive producer.
