A shooter injured eight and killed five people at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida on Friday, according to news reports. The shooter obtained the firearm from his luggage, which he had checked.
CNN reports that a suspect, 26-year-old Esteban Santiago, has been taken into custody. NBC News reports Santiago had a military ID and previously served in Iraq as well as in the Puerto Rico National Guard.
The shooter seemed to fire at random in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 of the airport, according to NBC News. Officials told the news outlet that the suspect flew from Anchorage, Alaska, to Minneapolis-St. Paul in Minnesota, to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, The New York Times reports that the Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel wouldn’t say if the suspect was actually a passenger on a flight, or came to the airport by other means.
The shooter’s motive is still unknown, the New York Times reports. “He was a lone shooter, and we have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else,” Broward County commissioner Barbara Sharief told The Times.
