4 Must-Read Books to Start Your Summer off Right

An occasionally wise man named Alice Cooper once sang, "No more school, no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks." While we like that song as much as the next rock n' roll geek, we have to say: We don't agree with the sentiment! We're all about saying sayonara to your textbooks until next season, but summer is the best time to read the things you actually want to read.
These four novels, out this month, are sure to keep you entertained this weekend (and beyond!), whether you're hanging poolside with your friends or embarking on a road trip with your family.

In an unexpected turn of events, a down-on-her-luck teen living in a trailer park in Missouri ends up in New York City dating a real-life prince (alas, not Harry, but still!) and posing for the cover of Vogue. There’s a lot of glamour and magic in this story, but the leading lady (and the reader!) learn that smoke and mirrors do not = happiness . According to the New York Times, "Mr. Rudnick may be the funniest writer for the stage in the United States today." And trust us, the same can be said about his talent as a YA author.

Anyone who's ever been dumped can relate to that desperate "oh my gosh I need to win him back ASAP/five minutes ago!" feeling. Not anyone can relate to feeling so heartbroken she sets her ex-boyfriend's car on fire—accidentally, of course!—and then follows him around so much he serves up a restraining order. But! Just because you've never been that heartbroken doesn't mean you won't totally relate to, and be endlessly entertained by, this story of a girl who does just that.

Remember back in the day when you'd breeze through dozens of Nancy Drew mysteries every summer? This is the grown up version. The protagonist is a super smart, incredibly relatable girl who's trying to find herself—while also trying to solve a tragic mystery that's been haunting her hometown. She accomplishes both, to varying degrees, and you just might discover a thing or two about yourself in the process.

If you're spending the summer at the beach, it only makes sense to read a book that takes place there, too. This darkly funny novel is about a teenage dude who flees to a sleepy oceanfront town for vacation and falls for a suspicious girl who's hiding a secret (or ten). Part mystery, part love story, this story is told from the POV of a boy—and written by a young guy—which makes it even cooler.
