The World’s Steepest Street Is Taking Over Instagram
Instagram has no shortage of photographic fads. Earlier this summer, rainbow Starbucks drinks were popping up on everyone’s news feeds, and just a few weeks ago, people were posing with Pokémon on the streets of their neighborhood. But if you want to try this latest Instagram trend, you'll have to travel – not just to a specific city, but to one particular street.
Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand is the steepest street in the entire world. That’s right, the entire world. It has even claimed a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
But if you visit this spot, make sure to stay safe! The steep slope can actually be really dangerous. A 19-year-old girl died on Baldwin Street in 2001 when she attempted to ride down the street in a wheelie bin. According to New Zealand’s tourism website, the slope of Baldwin Street is 19° or 35%, aka for every 2.86 meters traveled horizontally, the elevation rises by 1 meter. In layman's terms, that’s really, really steep. Be careful when you try to get that 'gram!
