Emma Roberts Invited Us to Her Exclusive Met Gala Fitting with Tory Burch

But on the eve of the 2016 Met Gala, Emma Roberts invited Teen Vogue to tag along to her private dress fitting with Tory Burch. The actress behind one of the most fashionable characters in modern TV history (Chanel Oberlin on Scream Queens), Emma knew all eyes would be on her Met Gala gown. With that kind of pressure surrounding her dress choice, Emma did exactly what any style chameleon would do: she chose a look that's like nothing she's ever worn.
Emma was immediately drawn to her one-of-a-kind Tory Burch gown, citing design elements like its resplendent color (a complement to her newly-dyed hair) and the millions of custom Swarovski crystals adorning the front. But truly, this collaboration was a long time in the making: Emma's been a fan of the Tory Burch brand since middle school, when she begged her Mom to buy her a pair of the designer's signature flats.
While she tried on her Met Gala dress for the first time, Emma chatted with us about her love for vintage shopping, her one tip for finding your personal style, and Chanel Oberlin's wardrobe on Scream Queens next season (she dropped a major hint!). Sketch Courtesy of Tory Burch2/11"I felt honored to be invited by her," Emma says of designer Tory Burch, who personally requested to dress the actress this year. "It's been so fun to go through the process of creating a dress with Tory and her team. I can't wait to see what she wears to Met!"
Photo: Noa Griffel3/11"I absolutely love the colors on the dress," says Emma of her custom Met Gala look. "I didn't know if it would go with my new red hair but it looks so cool! Also I love any kind of crystal or glitter so I was amazed to hear there would be custom Swarovski crystals on it — millions of them!"
Photo: Noa Griffel4/11As for the factors she considers when choosing a red carpet dress, Emma says that "comfort" is key. "But not literal comfort. I don't mind not being able to walk or breathe as long as I feel confident in the look! You have to feel like you even if you're doing something crazy or edgy," she explains.
Photo: Noa Griffel5/11To capture the "Manus x Machina" theme, "Tory’s design team hand cut Swarovski crystal rock fabric and then heat sealed it on my gown to give it a futuristic, modern technology vibe," Emma explained. "Tory wanted to honor the theme but keep it young, current and sexy."
Photo: Noa Griffel6/11Emma's been a fan of the Tory Burch brand since she was a pre-teen. "I have loved Tory Burch since middle school! I remember begging my mom to buy me the black Tory Burch flats with the gold symbol on them. She did and I felt incredibly cool wearing them. Especially since my school was uniform so shoes were how we expressed ourselves. Tory designs something for everyone and I love the colors she chooses. When she does orange, it isn't just orange, its the perfect orange."
Photo: Noa Griffel7/11Emma's love of vintage shopping is well-documented. Her #1 tip? "Always go with friends because you always need a second opinion on vintage," she explains. "I like to go to flea markets. In LA, Squaresville is a favorite spot of mine."
Photo: Noa Griffel8/11What can fans expect from Season 2 of Scream Queens? "[It] starts filming in July. It's in a hospital," Emma shares, adding: "If anyone can make a straightjacket chic, it's Chanel [Oberlin]."
Photo: Noa Griffel9/11"When we wrapped Season 1, I didn't wear heels for months," Emma reveals. "[Chanel] is in heels morning and night and I can't do it!"
Photo: Noa Griffel10/11When she's not dressing for the red carpet, "I'm a jeans girl," explains Emma. "Even when I get dressed up that usually means a slip with a leather jacket. I think finding what works for you and doing different versions of that is the best for everyday life."
