How 'Mean Girls' Would Be Different If It Took Place in 2018
As anyone who has lived through high school knows, Mean Girls portrays a fairly grim (if hilariously hyperbolized) depiction of the drama that can go down between teenagers. However, as the film was released in 2004, a lot has changed in the past 14 years since its release — and we're not just talking about the fact that the Plastics' phones would have gotten some serious upgrades by now. In fact, there’s a LOT that would be pretty different about Mean Girls if it were to take place in 2018. Here are 20 huge changes, from phone calls all the way to Toaster Strudels:
1/20The “Burn Book” would be a Burn Blog.
It would obviously have a premium layout and its very own domain. And instead of spreading photocopies of it around the school, Regina would create a fake Twitter account and go on a tweet-storm writing things like, “Amber D'Alessio . She made out with a hot dog. #BurnBlog2K16.”
2/20The 3-way call scene would be a group text.
And Karen would totally be that person who accidentally copies and pastes a text to the user who originally sent it. Oops.
3/20Regina would destroy anyone who commented on Aaron’s Instagram pics.
And if Aaron ever double-tapped another girl’s picture, all hell would break loose.
4/20And back when Snapchat still had its “Best Friends” feature, she’d be allll over that.
Regina would totally check it every day and would text Aaron constantly with questions like, “Omg who is ‘CutieGirl201’?!?!?!”
5/20Gretchen would get upset when she saw Karen tagged in pictures with Regina without her.
We can almost just picture Gretchen scrolling through her Facebook feed on her phone when she stumbles upon a story that reads, “Regina George was with Karen Smith at Pinkberry.” WHY DIDN’T THEY INVITE BRUTUS?!
6/20Janis would totally have a Tumblr.
And she’d re-blog the angstiest quotes imaginable.
7/20So would Damian.
His Tumblr would be dedicated to high fashion and his idol, Ariana Grande.
8/20And The Rainbow Girl would still have a Livejournal.
She’d obviously use the rainbow icons to describe her mood.
9/20Janis, Cady, and Damian would try to hack into Regina’s “finsta.”
It would be the second step in their mission to bring Regina down. Once inside, they’d post everything that they could imagine that might ruin her friendships and relationships.
10/20Mrs. George would be dropping lingo like “it’s lit” and “on fleek.”
“I’m one of the cool moms. Do you need anything? A Pumpkin Spice Latte? Love ya, you keep me young.” And then she’d dab, probably.
11/20Regina’s little sister would be dancing to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj.
And when she got tired, she’d sit down to watch an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians that’s been previously recorded on her DVR because Kylie Jenner is her namesake. (No really, her name is Kylie.)
12/20Speaking of King Kylie, Regina would totally have a Kylie Lip Kit in every color.
In fact, it would be a requirement to join the Plastics. If you can’t present your tubes of Leo, Love Bite, Brown Sugar, Dirty Peach or Maliboo, then YOU CAN’T SIT WITH US.
13/20Karen would ask Regina to go to Chipotle instead of Taco Bell.
“I CAN’T GO TO CHIPOTLE, I’M ON AN ALL-CARB DIET.”
14/20Gretchen’s dad would be the inventor of La Croix.
And she would remind everyone constantly by whipping out a can of coconut seltzer at lunch.
15/20Kevin Gnapoor would be a SoundCloud rapper.
He’d somehow garner like 15,000 followers, of course.
16/20One of the boys would ask Cady to “Netflix and chill."
She still wouldn’t get it.
17/20Cady would convince Regina to drink green juice smoothies instead of Kalteen bars.
“Yeah, these smoothies are made with kale and pineapple, and, like, everyone drinks them overseas. They have a secret Swedish ice cream that’s supposed to lower your gluten levels so you drop three dress sizes like that!”
18/20“One time, she met Justin Bieber on a plane.”
“And then he tweeted at her and told her she was pretty.”
19/20Regina’s favorite movie would be The Fault in Our Stars or Paper Towns.
She’d also be obsessed with Gossip Girl.
20/20And the biggest change: Aaron wouldn’t have to ask Cady what day it was because he would just check his phone.
And then we would never have Mean Girls day. Maybe it’s good that it took place in 2004 after all.
