Hubert de Givenchy's Legacy: 10 Pop Culture Moments We Won't Forget

The house of Givenchy is close to seventy years old: a phenomenal feat in an ever-changing retail environment that has shuttered even the toughest and most innovative brands. Its founder, Hubert de Givenchy, passed away today at the age of 91. On Twitter, the brand's official account wrote: "The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. He will be greatly missed."

Monsieur Givenchy was best known for dressing some of the world's most stylish women and becoming their friends in the process — icons including Audrey Hepburn and First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis. His LBD for the former's legendary role in classic film, Breakfast at Tiffany's, changed fashion and little black dresses everywhere. Givenchy stayed in his post for over forty years until 1996, when his exit from the brand's lead design role gave way for other designers to put their own spin on the house, including the likes of John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien MacDonald, Ozwald Boateng, Riccardo Tisci, and Clare Waight Keller.

Tisci ushered in an entirely new era for the house over his twelve year tenure: again connecting Givenchy with pop culture and infusing the brand with his own penchant for streetwear. The Italian design phenom became a celebrity in his own right, before handing over the reins to Waight Keller in a moment that marked the arrival of Givenchy's first woman artistic director.
