How To Get A Pretty Prom Updo For Curly-Haired Girls

We chatted up celebrity hairstylist Tippi Shorter, who has worked with such curly-headed stars as Alicia Keys and Rihanna, and she gave us a step-by-step guide to getting a pretty updo for the big night.

First, wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo, and use a deep conditioner. Sulfate-free shampoos will keep your hair from frizzing and won't dry it out.

Next, use the Glaze Leave-In Conditioner and Curly Cream from my line, Hair by Tippi Shorter. These will detangle your hair and help add shine and control the curl.

Using snag-less ponytail holders, gather your hair, section by section, into the center of your head, creating four top knot buns, all in a line going down your head, where your part would be.
Brazilian Heat5/6Blow Dryer
Then, diffuse your hair with a good blow dryer and diffusing attachment. Scrunch you hair as it dries so that you get maximum volume. Once your hair is dry, separate it into four sections from front to back.
TIGI6/6Hair Stick
Finally, using a little bit of texturizing wax on your fingertips, gently pull the curls out of the bun and tug the sides of the buns until they are fatter, messier and look more like a cohesive line of hair, rather than four distinct buns. Secure all the loose pieces with bobby pins, and finish with a spritz of light hold hairspray to keep the look in place.
