The 9 Best Beach Sprays for Every Hair Texture

Teen Vogue is celebrating the start of summer with a series of stories on all things swim. From the latest trends to buying the perfect suit, find everything you need to know here.
You know how they say, dress for the job you want? Well, the same goes for your hairstyle. During fall and winter, we try to perfect the easy and effortless style that is beach waves in hopes that the temperatures would rise. Now, come summer, it is time to put our skills to the test and bust out the hair look of the season. Sure, Hollywood-esque waves have been spotted down the recent runways and on the Queen of the North, but nothing beats loose waves that make you feel like you're on your way to the beach even though you are on the way to your summer class or work.
One thing is for sure though: Even though you might have your go-to wave tools, when it comes to beach sprays, not all sea salt and beach sprays are created equal. Just as other hair products are formulated to work uniquely for different hair types, so are these sprays. So, to help you out, we asked stylists and hair experts for their recommendations on beachy sprays for various hair types.
Read on to find the one for you.
For Curly or Unruly Hair: Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray
ORIBE Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray
If you want to turn your unruly curls into effortless, moisture-rich beach waves, opt for Oribe’s Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray. “Great on curly, unruly, or even over-processed ends, this spray will add shine and definition [to] any lackluster 'do,” Faith Huffnagle, a DreamDry senior stylist tells Teen Vogue. “Its direct spray allows deep penetration into the style and works amazing as a UV protector from the sun.”
For Colored, Chemically Treated, and Damaged Hair: Sachajuan Ocean Mist

If your hair gets put through the chemical ringer, it’s key to use a beach spray that not only gives it the texture you want but also imparts a little extra TLC — which is where Sachajuan’s Ocean Mist comes in. “More moisturizing than a salt spray, our sugar mist will add a soft texture to your locks, rather than a rough, crunchy feel,” Sachajuan co-founder, Sacha Mitic, tells Teen Vogue. “The secret behind the high-performing formula in our spray [is] ocean silk technology. This combination of algae and other tailor-made ingredients has a healing effect on treated or damaged hair, giving it maximum shine, volume, stability, and care. This spray can be used on clean, wet or dry hair to add radiant texture and volume.”
For Dry Hair: Captain Blankenship Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray
Captain Blankenship Organic Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray
There’s no need to sacrifice moisture to get that texturized beach look. Captain Blankenship’s Mermaid Sea Salt spray includes a couple of special ingredients that act as moisturizers for your dry hair. “Some sea salt sprays can be hard on drier hair types, but ours has organic aloe vera and organic sea kelp extract, so it won't leave your hair feeling dehydrated and crunchy,” Jana Blankenship, founder of Captain Blankenship, tells Teen Vogue. And if you want extra moisture in the summer heat, you can pair it with the brand’s Mermaid Hair Oil.
For Non-Color-Treated Hair: IGK Beach Club Texture Spray
IGK Beach Club Texture Spray
Your hair has been au natural all your life? Then the Beach Club Volumizing Texture Spray is the one for you because it’s a salt-free, hydrating wave spray that also gives UV protection. "Most wave or texturizing sprays have salt, which can dry out your hair and negatively affect your hair. Beach Club uses glycerin, a natural humectant, and gluten-free hydrolyzed wheat proteins to give you natural body and texture without being drying or sticky.", Franck Izquierdo, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of IGK, tells Teen Vogue.
For Medium and Thick, Straight to Wavy Hair:
OUAI Wave Spray
If you're worried your hair is to thick for the waves to stick, OUAI has you covered, according to Jen Atkin's, celebrity hairstylist and founder of OUAI Haircare. She even spilled to Teen Vogue how to get the perfect waves on your straight to wavy hair, "Use the Wave Spray on damp or dry hair from roots and to ends, and let it air dry to enhance your natural wave pattern or twist random strands for more defined waves. I use it pre and post styling for piecey, lived in texture and to enhance a natural wave pattern. I love this product because unlike most wave sprays, it contains no salt (which dries out the strands) and instead uses rice protein to create texture."
For Long, Layered Hair: White Sands Gluten Free UnderCover Styling Spray

If you have a long, layered or shag haircut, go for White Sands’ UnderCover Styling Spray. Fernano Salas, the creator of White Sands Haircare, tells Teen Vogue that “it will capture frizzy flyaways while creating a piecey look without weighing down the hair. [Plus], the addition of silk proteins automatically skyrockets the shine and moisture factors, turning this into a smart texture spray that eliminates frizz for a smooth, soft finish.”
For Oily Hair: Hairstory Undressed

On the flip side, if your hair's on the oily side, Daviero recommends Hairstory’s Undressed spray. “It has a refined effect [and your] hair looks beautifully undone,” she says. “It’s perfect for oily hair…[and] creates a soft, but matte texture.”
For Fine, Straight Hair: Evo Salty Dog Cocktail Beach Spray

Anessa Daviero, stylist and co-founder of New York’s Headdress Salon, tells Teen Vogue that Evo’s Salty Dog Cocktail Beach Spray is “a fine-haired girl’s best friend,” because it achieves beachy, textured waves without weighing your hair down. “A lot of salt sprays out there can leave fine, straight hair looking crunchy and lifeless,” she says. “Adding a few sprays of this to your hair instantly creates a salty texture and fullness with a matte finish. Plus, it smells delightful.”
For Ever-Changing Hair: Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray

Not all of us have hair that’s easily defined: One day it’s frizzy, the next it’s smooth, the day after that it’s super wavy, and then it seems straighter. If you have multiple hair personalities, celebrity hairstylist Lee Rittiner of L.A.’s Alen-M Salon recommends Healthy Sexy Hair’s Soy Renewal Beach Spray, a texturizing and conditioning product with nourishing argan oil. “I love [it] because it’s so universal,” he tells Teen Vogue. “I can use it on clients with different textures and even color-treated hair, and all of them are able to achieve that effortless, undone beachy look. It doesn’t limit me.”
